Haberlin will run to keep finance seat in special election

On Friday, April 4, the Trumbull RTC nominated William S. Haberlin to run for the Board of Finance special election. Haberlin’s nomination was ratified by the unanimous vote of the RTC nominating convention.

“I accept the nomination and I am looking forward to continuing to serve the Town of Trumbull on the Board of Finance,” Haberlin said. “I believe that my well-rounded public service record, current experience on the Trumbull Board of Finance and my business experience have prepared me well for this position. I am a fiscal conservative who believes that we must balance the needs of the community with a reasonable and predictable mil rate.”

Haberlin was appointed to the seat by First Selectman Timothy Herbst, following the resignation of State Rep. Dave Rutigliano last November. Democrats Tom Kelly and Vicki Tesoro attempted to petition for a special election for the seat but were initially denied by the town clerk. The Democrats later took the issue to court and the town agreed to have a special election go forward, now set for July 22. The Democrats have nominated Lainie McHugh to run for the seat, see story here.

“Bill is the ideal candidate to serve on the Board of Finance,” Paul S. Lavoie, Chairman of the RTC said. “He is a small business owner and past Chairman of the Stratford Town Council and the Finance and Ordinance Committees in Stratford. He has a unique understanding of how municipal finances work and is the most qualified candidate to properly represent the taxpayers of Trumbull. He balances the needs of the entire community and truly supports the three pillars of Trumbull; sound finances, outstanding schools and a great quality of life.”

Haberlin’s community involvement includes past president of the following associations; Connecticut Personnel Association, Greater Bridgeport Personnel Association and YMCA Business Management Club. In addition, he is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the First Congregational Church of Stratford, Board of Trustee Member of the Sterling House Community Center, Past President of the Stratford Jaycees and a member of the Board of Directors of the Stratford Congregational Burying Grounds.

Mr. Haberlin is married to the former Carol Gilbride and they have two grown children.
