Twenty-four indoor percussion ensembles from seven states will perform at the 2016 Trumbull Percussion Regional at Trumbull High School’s gymnasium Saturday, Feb. 27.

The doors open at 9:00 a.m. with preliminary performances starting at 10:00 am. Doors will reopen at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday evening for the finals part of the competition.

Indoor percussion ensembles compete in an activity that involves an array of equipment, movement, and skill. A variety of percussive instruments and other props are utilized to bring music and themes to life while displaying technique, creativity, and expression.

Competition is separated into eight classes based on the complexity of the program and if the ensemble is affiliated with a school (scholastic) or not (independent). Classes are further divided by “Marching” or “Concert” style programs.

Local percussion ensembles competing in the regional include: Trumbull High School, New Milford High School, Newtown High School, Westhill High School, Norwalk High School, and Stamford High School.

These local groups start rehearsing their show in early winter with music, movement and visuals.  The practice and preparation for these events take hours of hard work by both the participants, staff and music departments.  Trumbull is fortunate to host a regional event on this scale with a few National groups competing as well. This year United Percussion, Spirit Winter Percussion and Cadets Winter Percussion will all be in attendance.

WGI Sport of the Arts is in its 39th year of existence as the governing body for the competitive winter guard and indoor percussion activities. The “Sport of the Arts” offers a unique blend of artistry and athleticism and is a leader in the pageantry/performing arts community. The city of Dayton will serve as host for the WGI World Championships for the 30th time. The Percussion World Championships will be held April 15-17, 2016 at the University of Dayton Arena.

Tickets are $15 for the preliminary performance, and $18 for finals. A $28 combo prelims/finals ticket is also available at the admissions table on the day of the event.
