Study Skills Program for high school students debuts in Trumbull
This March, Successful Study Skills 4 Students (S4) will be offering S4’s popular study skills workshop to high school students. This is the first time the research-based S4 student workshop series has been offered in Trumbull. The workshops foster academic achievement by teaching students key study strategies that help them learn while reducing stress.
The workshop is open to all area students who are enrolled in grades 9 through 12.
Classes will be held on three Sundays: March 16, 23, 30, from 2-5 p.m., at The Trumbull Library, 33 Quality St. Accredited teachers instruct the dynamic workshops and class size is limited to 15 students. A small class size allows for more focused and individualized attention to be given to each participating student.
“We are excited to offer the S4 workshops in Trumbull for the first time,” said president of S4, Michelle Sagalyn. “Whether students are just transitioning into high school or are simply looking to improve their overall academic experience, we offer tools that can help them succeed. Implementing even a single new skill has been shown to boost students’ motivation and academic performance.”
The S4 program provides students with the skills and strategies needed for academic confidence, motivation and preparation. Benefits of learning study skills include:
Better classroom engagement
Reduced anxiety and stress
Strategies for longer retention
Better preparation for class, tests and projects
Increased ability to synthesize information
Enhanced critical-thinking skills
An independent approach to learning
Students in the S4 workshop will learn foundational study skills for time management, organization, and executive functioning. Skills taught include goal-setting, using a planner, note-taking methods, self-advocacy, active reading and listening techniques, identifying main ideas and supporting details, using visuals, summarizing to learn, and long-term project and test preparation strategies.
S4 supplies all materials for the workshops. Each day, students will return home with materials that complement and reinforce the day’s lessons. Parents are provided with post-session emails that explain what was taught in the day’s lesson, and provide information for how to support students in practicing the new skills.
The 7.5 hour, three-session workshop costs $395. For more information contact S4 at 203-30-S-K-I-L-L (203-307-5455), or e-mail info@S4StudySkills.com . To register online, visit http://bit.ly/1Q14-Trumbull.
