Retired U.S. Navy Commander Richard McCarthy is the keynote speaker at  this year's Veterans Day celebration at Trumbull High School on Tuesday, Nov., 11, at 8:30 a.m.

Veterans of Trumbull and surrounding towns are encouraged to attend; there will be refreshments for veterans and their guests in the auditorium lobby beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Rick McCarthy is a Command (retired), Medical Service Corps, United States Navy. He currently serves as the chief information officer for St. Vincent’s Health Services. He comes to St. Vincent’s with 21 years of healthcare IT experience and a proven record of leadership.

A Trumbull High School alumni (class of ’86), he went on to graduate from the University of Connecticut in 1990 with a degree in Health Systems Management and received his Master’s Degree in Information Technology from the University of Maryland University College.

McCarthy began a U.S. Naval career at Naval Medical Center, San Diego as the Communications officer and assistant department head. From there he moved on to a variety of medical Information Technology positions including Chief Information Office, Naval Hospital, Naples, Italy; Medical Chief Information Officer, Health Services Support Division, Joint Staff; Administrator, Branch Health Clinic, Kings Bay Georgia and Chief Information Office, Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth, Va..

In addition to his normal medical positions, McCarthy deployed as the Medical Regulator overseeing all medical evacuations in Southwest Asia March thru Sept 1993; Communications Officer, Fleet Hospital 8, February through August 2003;, and finally as the chief operating officer of the NATO Multi-national Medical Unit (a Level 1 Trauma Center) in Kandahar, Afghanistan from August 2010 through August 2011.

McCarthy’s personal military awards include two Navy Marine Corps Achievement medal, three Navy Marine Corps Commendation, Army Commendation, Joint Service Commendation, two Meritorious Service Medal and the Joint Service

McCarthy resides in Monroe with his wife Joelle and their three children.
