Midshipman 3/C Kathleen LaBoa completed an intensive training cruise this summer aboard the USS Nimitz (CVN 68) while the ship was deployed in the Persian Gulf.

During the cruise, Midshipman LaBoa had many opportunities to participate in the different warfare specialties of an aircraft carrier at sea. Highlights included trapping on to the carrier in a C-2 aircraft, assisting in an underway replenishment, and flying in an SH-60 helicopter during a plane guard mission.

Midshipman LaBoa is a Dean’s List nursing student at Duquesne University. She is a member of the “Steel City” NROTC unit. As a future Naval Officer in the Nurse Corps, she spent most of her time onboard Nimitz with the medical detachment. Her training in the medical department included “scrubbing in” on an appendectomy, participating in casualty drills, and learning the roles and responsibilities of the corpsman, nurses, and doctors in the medical department.

Kathleen is a 2012 graduate of Trumbull High School. She is returning early to college to assist in the training of incoming NROTC freshmen.
