Longtime pastor to lie in repose today, funeral Friday
The Rev. Monsignor Louis A. DeProfio, who served as pastor of St. Theresa Church in Trumbull for more than three decades, died Aug. 15 in Stamford. He was 91. DeProfio’s body will be received at St. Theresa Church today at 3 p.m., and will lie in repose until the Vigil Mass at 7 p.m. Monsignor Thomas Powers will be the celebrant, and the Rev. Joseph Marcello will be the homilist. Bishop Frank J. Caggiano will celebrate the Funeral Mass on Friday at 11 a.m., and Monsignor Andrew Varga will be the homilist.
In DeProfio’s obituary, Caggiano described DeProfio as “a man of remarkable vitality, energy and optimism. He brought good cheer, natural leadership and deep faith to his sacrificial service as a priest. He inspired generations of Catholics and leaves a lasting legacy of the joy of faithful witness. I ask all to please pray for the repose of the soul of Monsignor DeProfio, and for the consolation of his family.”
Born in Bridgeport in 1927, DeProfio was the youngest of seven children. After graduating from Central High School, he served in the U.S. Navy before entering St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield. He was ordained into the priesthood by Bishop Lawrence Shehan in 1956.
After serving several assignments in Connecticut, including director of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), DeProfio was appointed pastor of St. Theresa on Sept. 11, 1971. He would remain there until his retirement in December 2003.
