We are living in an amazing age where information is available at our finger tips. With just a few keystrokes, we can access volumes of data and information about just about any topic we desire, but the question is: how good is that information and is there an agenda behind the source that is not immediately obvious? With the Internet and social media, disinformation and propaganda can spread just as fast as objective analysis and scientific facts. How can we know that the information we are getting is reliable? The answer to that question is complicated, but perhaps it begins with being aware of the many ways that information is being manipulated and delivered to us for nefarious purposes.

The 2014 film “Merchants of Doubt” from Participant Media and Sony Pictures Classics pulls back the curtain on a hidden world where a small group of politically well-connected, media-savvy men-for-hire have sewn doubt and confusion in the public’s mind about the science of tobacco addiction, toxic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, climate change and more. The film is directed by Robert Kenner ("Food, Inc." and "When Strangers Click") and based on the acclaimed book of the same title by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway.

There are so many films of substance that are produced by caring and dedicated individuals who seek to make our world a better place. So often, their hard work appears in theaters for just a few days and then they are gone. The hosts of this screening seek to bring some of these films back to the forefront so that their message can reach a wider audience, make a greater impact, and inspire more people to work to make this a better world.

The Unitarian Church in Westport is a welcoming religious community that seeks to inspire, connect, and act in the service of peace and justice. DFA-Fairfield County (aka Democracy for Connecticut) believes in socially progressive, fiscally responsible government that listens to the people. Their focus is on grassroots political organizing to effect change at all levels of government. The KJS Legacy Project seeks to extend the legacy of Kevin Joseph Sutherland in striving for a “more perfect union.”
