Text a tip to report underage drinking. Mobile phone users in Trumbull now have the ability to provide tips through anonymous text messaging and online web tips. Local officials hope residents will use the forum to report and help curb underage drinking. The Trumbull Police Department has teamed up with Anderson Software to provide the service, which allows citizens to send anonymous tips by sending a text message from a mobile phone or online. The funding for the program was provided by Trumbull Partnership Against Underage Drinking & Drugs (TPAUD). “Underage drinking is a serious matter,” states a description of the program on the Trumbull Police Department website. “Connecticut’s House Party Law is very clear. In Connecticut, it is illegal to host a party where alcohol is consumed by minors. Individuals who knowingly permit minors to possess and/or consume alcohol may be fined, imprisoned or both. With the financial support of TPAUD, we have been able to implement an anonymous tip line to which residents can report underage drinking.” The service was built specifically to allow text messaging informants to remain anonymous by encrypting the text messages and routing them through several secure servers, protecting the personal details of the informant. Trumbull police say they encourage people to report information about underage drinking or any non-urgent illegal activity, such as unsolved cases, vandalism, theft, the sale and distribution of drugs or information about crimes that are being planned in the community or schools. To send an anonymous tip to the Trumbull Police Department via cell phone, a person will text "TRPD" plus his or her tip information to CRIMES (274637). The person then receives a confirmation and a unique code number. The person may respond back by simply replying. There is no premium cost for the service. Standard text messaging rates apply for messages sent and received (if applicable). People can also send anonymous tips while they are online by going to trumbull-ct.gov/PoliceTips.
