Police warn of hostage scam
Trumbull Police are warning residents about a new scam circulating in the Trumbull area.
Two bogus "hostage scams" were reported in Trumbull this week. Residents said the caller claimed to have a family member and demanded a ransom of several thousand dollars. The caller, who police said had a Hispanic accent tells the victims to wire money to a specific location. The incidents occurred Feb. 4 and Feb. 5.
If you receive a call like this, do not send money, police say, but report the call immediately to Trumbull Police at 203-261-3665 or 911. Police also recommend contacting the family member mentioned by the caller.
"Several investigative leads are currently being followed in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies," according to Lt. Leonard Scinto.
This type of scam has recently occurred in Milford as well.
