Police: Trumbull resident was manager of illegal casino

A Trumbull resident was allegedly the manager of the illegal casino raided in Norwalk last week, according to police.

On Wednesday June 19th at approximately 9:30 p.m. members of the Norwalk Police Department Special Services Division and members of the Emergency Services Unit executed a search and seizure warrant at 94 East Ave. This culminated a lengthy investigation into illegal gambling in a premise located on the third floor named the “Royal Poker Room.”

Police arrested Pedro Couto, 34, of Trumbull, along with several others they said were working there.

Through several hours of surveillance and the utilization of undercover officers, investigators were able to obtain the probable cause necessary for the warrant. Officers had received information the entrance to the Poker room was fortified and under electronic surveillance to prevent and monitor entry .That the door was locked and entry was only granted after you were identified by management. Many of the management personnel had been identified prior to the execution of the warrant.

The Royal Poker room was open five nights a week, police said, and many of the nights had different themes ,(ie tournament night or sporting event related ). Investigators  had received information that the management of the Poker Room was receiving a “cut” from the pot which varied in different percentages from hand to hand. The only game that was played at the tables was “Texas Hold Em.”

Upon executing the warrant officers located 24 patrons actively gambling at three active card tables. One of the patrons jumped up from a card table and fled from clearly identifiable police officers into the money room. Officers observed this subject jump from a window in an attempt to escape. This subject was critically injured as result of the fall and was transported to the hospital, where he later died. Patrons were identified and released.

Pedro Couto age 34 of Trumbull (manager)

Daniel Rehm age 30 of New Rochelle N.Y. (dealer)

Andre Rodriguez age 32 of Bronx, N.Y. (pit boss)

Fernando Marin age 32 of Stamford (dealer)

Veronica Dandrova age 22 of Bridgeport (dealer)

Kevin Mullo age 33 of Norwalk (dealer)

The investigation is ongoing more arrests are expected.
