Police: BMW stolen from Trumbull, recovered in New Haven

A 2016 BMW X1, valued at $50,000, was stolen from an Elberta Avenue home sometime Thursday night, according to police. The vehicle was recovered the next day behind a vacant house in the Fair Haven section of New Haven.

Police said the vehicle had been left unlocked and with the keys inside. A purse and other valuables were also left inside the SUV. Personal property was also reported stolen from at least one other unlocked car in the neighborhood that night.

The owner reported the theft to police Friday morning.

Trumbull Police continue to remind residents:

  • Always lock vehicles when they are left parked outdoors;

  • Do not leave keys inside the vehicle;

  • Don’t leave valuables visible in the car;

  • Park in a well-lit area, or in a garage when possible.
