A Trumbull father was arrested for allegedly leaving three children in the car, with keys in the ignition, while he went into the U.S. Post Office Monday afternoon.

Oluwakayode Ekwunife-Orakwue, 36, of Koger Street, parked his car in a lot on Quality Street. He told police he went into the post office for a short time, leaving the children, ages 10, 2 and 1 in the car, with the windows rolled down and keys in the ignition.

An off-duty Bridgeport Police Officer reported the unattended children to the Trumbull Police. The off-duty officer told police that the man came back out within 3-5 minutes after he had called police and agreed to wait for officers to respond.

Ekwunife-Orakwue told officers that he knew he shouldn’t have left the children alone but he had just went to the post office. The mother of the children was also called and responded to the scene.

Ekwunife-Orakwue was charged with three counts of risk of injury to a minor and three counts of leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle.

The state Department of Children and Families was contacted to investigate.

He is set to appear in court July 9.
