Man arrested for groping child at Trumbull Mall
A Shelton man was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 2, after allegedly groping a 9-year-old female at the Westfield Trumbull Mall.
Trumbull police said that Ameer Stewart, 18, of Windfield Drive, was charged with fourth-degree sexual assault, breach of peace and risk of injury to a minor in connection with the incident, which occurred about 3 p.m.
Police said a female shopper reported that while she was shopping with her daughter in the children’s clothing section of Target, a man had grabbed her daughter’s buttocks two times. The mother, who was on her phone at the time of the incident with her daughter nearby, told police that her daughter came up to her in a terrified state and told her that a man had just grabbed her buttocks.
Police said the child was able to point Stewart out to her mother, who immediately confronted him. According to police, Stewart ignored her and walked away. She then reported the incident to Target security personnel who were able to view the incident on the store’s video surveillance system.
Using the description provided by the victim and her mother, and the photos obtained from the store video, Trumbull police officers located Stewart in another area of the mall a short time later. He attempted to escape, but was apprehended and taken into custody after a brief foot chase.
Stewart was held on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 10.
