Most people only know what others have told them about the Bible, never having read it themselves. But often, those who decide they want to read through it get discouraged by how long and complicated the Bible is. It’s not in chronological order like most books, it repeats and/or contradicts itself often, its language and images are often hard to follow, and it is compiled from a wide range of diverse writings from many different sources, all seemingly with their own point of view.

For those wondering where to begin in learning more about the Bible and what’s in it, a new book group is starting this fall. The community of Grace Church, 5958 Main St., in Trumbull, will be reading the entire Bible together from Genesis through Revelation using a book called, The Story, which is a narrative version of the Bible that tells the entire Biblical story, from Genesis to Revelation, in 31 readable chapters. A narrative in 31 chapters will obviously not include every detail of the complete Bible, but The Story does a commendable job of covering all the major themes of the Bible in a chronological way, making it easier to read and to absorb. Once you’ve read The Story, you will have gained a new level of understanding of the Bible overall and will find it much easier to dive more deeply into it in the future.

One chapter will be discussed each week in one of two book group meetings — either Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m., or Sunday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Elsa Worth will also focus on the themes of the week’s chapter during the sermon each Sunday in the 9:30 a.m. service.

There is no experience with the Bible necessary to take part in this book group, and your doubts and difficult questions are more than welcome. Anyone interested in taking part is welcome to get a copy of the book and join in whenever they can.

The Story is also available in special versions for teens, kids ages 8-12, children age 4-8, and even toddlers. This way, parents can enjoy sharing The Story at home with their children, chapter by chapter, at the same time that they are reading it themselves. Participants in the book group will be asked to read chapter 1 in preparation for the first meeting on either Sept. 22 or Sept. 25 .
