Sand Sculpture Contest open to amateurs

The Fairfield Police Athletic League is sponsoring its annual Sand Sculpture Contest to be held on the sandbar at Penfield Beach on Saturday, Aug. 17, from noon to 2 p.m. Rain date Aug. 18.

The event is open to amateurs who want to try their hand at creating artwork at the beach. There is no charge for this event, but registration is required. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. Forms will be available at the event. There is no pre-registration, just look for the PAL sign at Penfield Beach on the day of the event.

Interested participants may register as teams or as individuals.  Individual entrants must be 18 years old or under and teams must include at least one member 18 or under. Families are encouraged to enter as a team and work together on a creation. Only objects found in nature may be included in the sculpture. Participants should bring any tools they will need to create their masterpiece.

The creations in previous years have included simple shapes, mermaids, alligators, castles, cars, current events and just about anything one can think of. Participants have ranged from very young to grandparents helping with family team entries. All are welcome.

Prizes will be awarded for the following categories:  Best Castle, Most Original Sculpture, Most Realistic Sculpture and Most Artistic Creation.
