The Trumbull High School Debate Team hosted the Connecticut Debate Association’s monthly tournament on Jan. 10.
More than 150 students participated in the event representing fifteen high schools from across the state, including: Amity, Daniel Hand, E.O. Smith, Fairfield Ludlowe, Fairfield Warde, Glastonbury, Hamden, Lauralton Hall, Marine Science, Plainfield, St. Joseph, Tolland, Trumbull, Wethersfield and Xavier.
Sixteen Trumbull debate team members competed in both the varsity and novice divisions. Varsity teammates Ben Hazen and Michael Kenler won the championship versus a strong Amity High School team in the penultimate debate that capped the day’s competitions.
Hazen was also awarded the Varsity division’s First Place Speaker trophy.
In addition to congratulating all of her team members, advisor Hope Spalla expressed her appreciation for support provided by both the Trumbull ACE Foundation and the Trumbull High PTSA that enabled the team to host the event for the first time.
