Police said the chase ended in Davidson County after the driver of the vehicle attempted to run over sheriff's deputies.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office said that two of its deputies shot at the SUV and killed one of the occupants and injured another. The wounded person went to a hospital. A third person was taken into custody.

The vehicle had stopped in the community of Linwood, which is south of Lexington.

Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Mike Burns did not release the names of any of the people involved, including the deputies. Authorities have also not released the races of those involved.

Burns declined to comment on whether a gun was found in the Mercedes or whether the person killed was the driver or a passenger.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation into the use of deadly force.
