Trumbull High School Choirs host spring concert May 18

The Trumbull High School Choirs celebrate a year of music with their annual Spring Concert. Join the young singers on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:30 pm in the Trumbull High School Auditorium, 72 Strobel Road. Tickets are $5, available at the door. The Choirs will be performing some of the selections they brought with them on their recent New Orleans tour, including Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal, a special piano four hands piece, and Sanctus which will be presented here by the Concert Choir. Lineage and Hope Is the Breath of Music will be among the pieces performed by the Women’s Ensemble; Sing Your Way Home and Sinner Man are selections for the Men’s Ensemble; and Welsh Lullaby and Wade in the Water will be performed by the Freshman Choir. Additional music including Eric Whitacre’s Water Music and the doo wop favorite, Since I Don’t Have You, are included in the varied program. Choir Director Anne Tornillo leads the five choral groups of over 200 singers. Graduating seniors will be honored and the evening will conclude with Beethoven’s Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, an annual tradition at Trumbull High. "This final concert is kind of bittersweet for me," said senior Christina Garrity. "I'm glad to be going to college and moving on with my life, however, I know that I'm going to miss the regularity and relief that chorus brought to my life. "After school on Monday, I always had Ensembles. The Yankee Candle fundraiser was in the Spring, Phone-a-Thon was in the fall," she added. "It was clockwork. I always knew that if I was having a bad day or if I was really stressed out, chorus would help. It's hard work, but well worth it." Christina praised her teacher saying Ms. Tornillo holds the group to a high standard. "She knows that we're capable of reaching it," the Trumbull High School student said. "She picks songs for us that are challenging both mentally and vocally. "The audience can't see it, but my favorite part of the concert is always the proud little smiles Ms. T gives us while we're singing," she added. I'm going to miss being on stage with the Trumbull High School Choir, but I'm excited to be able to come back next year as an alumni." All of the choral groups combine on stage joined by chorus alumni from the audience for a spirited and uplifting finale. "As another year comes to an end for the THS Choir it's really bitter sweet," said senior Andrea Alicea. "We're all excited to present something that we've worked on for so long. I think I speak for everyone that were all a little sad because for some of us, it means performing with our best friends for the last time." Andrea said that she's learned so much these past three years, including a spin on an age-old idiom "It take a village to all of our hard work together," she said, reflecting on the lessons learned. "Ms. T chooses these wonderful pieces and takes a lot of time to prepare for each one. We have student instrumentalist who take the time to learn and preform each piece and we all come together to put on a great performance. "My favorite part about our choir is seeing the transition from getting new music to finally being able to preform our music in front of an audience," she added. "It truly has been the greatest three years of my life and I'm so excited to see what the future holds."
