The Town of Trumbull, together with American Legion Post 141 and VFW Post 10059 will host the following events Monday, May 29, in celebration of Memorial Day.\u00a0James Rowe of Booth Hill Elementary school is the winner of this year's Memorial Day Theme Contest with "Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom." Memorial Service to honor fallen Vietnam Veterans, 7:30 a.m.\u00a0at the Vietnam Memorial Site, White Plains Road. Memorial service in memory of all deceased veterans will begin at 8:30 a.m.\u00a0at Town Hall. Annual Memorial Day Parade will step off at 10 from Cast Iron Chop House (6540 Main Street) and march along Main Street to Town Hall. The Grand Marshal for this year's Memorial Day Parade is Vanessa Marshall. Vanessa joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1964. After a short assignment at Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, she was ordered to the medical command at Camp Zama, Japan, where she served for the next three years. Initially a 100-bed facility, the hospital became part of medical backup for Viet Nam and quickly expanded to 800 beds for those troops who could be treated and returned to combat. While her primary duty was staff education, she worked wherever needed, from med-vac admissions to general medical and surgical units, maternity and critical care. Subsequent assignments included a tour in Stuttgart, Germany, and multiple stateside bases. Vanessa retired as a Major after 20 years of service. Upon completion of a doctorate in public health, she accepted a faculty position at Yale. She has been a resident of Trumbull for 30 years. This year's Memorial Day Parade will include Veterans, Barnum Festival Royal Court, local dignitaries, 192nd Engineering Battalion, Trumbull High School Golden Eagle Marching Band, St. Joseph's High School Steel Band, Hillcrest Middle School Band, Madison Middle School Band, and a number of civic and scouting organizations. In the event the parade is cancelled to inclement weather, an announcement will be made on WICC 600 AM and WEBE 107.9 FM radio, and posted to the Town of Trumbull website. If the parade is cancelled the Memorial Service will take place at 8:30 a.m.\u00a0in the Council Chambers at Town Hall.
