St. V's receives straight A's for hospital safety

St. Vincent’s Medical Center has been recognized for its dedication to patient safety by being awarded its eighth consecutive A grade in the Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score, which rates how well hospitals protect patients from preventable medical errors, injuries, and infections within the hospital. St. Vincent’s also is being recognized as a “Straight A’s” hospital for never receiving a grade lower than an A from the Hospital Safety Score since the Score first launched in June 2012-a tremendous achievement. It is the only hospital in Connecticut to earn straight A’s since 2012.
An A safety grade is one of the most meaningful honors a hospital can achieve, and one of the most valuable indicators for patients looking for a safe place to receive care. The Hospital Safety Score is the gold standard rating for patient safety, compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts and administered byThe Leapfrog Group, a national, independent nonprofit. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to give consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.
“At St. Vincent’s, patient safety is our number one priority,” stated Stuart G. Marcus, MD, president and CEO, St. Vincent’s Health Services. “I couldn’t be more proud of our team for earning this recognition. Every day and with every patient, our providers commit themselves to delivering safe, high quality health care and an exceptional patient experience. We have been caring for generations of families in our region for over a century and our community knows they can trust St. Vincent’s.”
“St. Vincent’s Medical Center is one of only 133 hospitals in the country to have achieved Straight A’s from the Hospital Safety Score since 2012,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score. “I commend you for your consistency in putting your patients first, and urge your continued vigilance in keeping your patients safe.”
Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score, representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in October 2015, with 773 hospitals receiving an A grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, offering a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades on the website. Now, for the first time, patients can also review their hospital’s past safety performance alongside its current grade on the Hospital Safety Score site, allowing them to determine which local hospitals have the best track record in patient safety and which have demonstrated consistent improvement.
St. Vincent’s longstanding commitment to quality and patient safety begins during new employee orientation. Every employee, regardless of position, receives “high reliability” safety training. This is true of St. Vincent’s physicians, as well. Implementation of this rigorous safety program has resulted in numerous awards in addition to the “A” Hospital Safety Score™.
Adding to its list of safety credentials, according to the most current data, St. Vincent’s is the only hospital in the state to receive both the Leapfrog “A” and Nursing Magnet® recognition, the highest national award for nursing excellence. The hospital also was named a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of national health care organizations, and was featured as a model of a high reliability organization by both the Joint Commission and the U.S. Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) educational website for hospitals. Likewise, U.S. News and World Report named St. Vincent’s Medical Center ‘Best Hospital’ in Fairfield County and in all of Western Connecticut for 2013-2016 in its Best Hospitals Survey.
