Competing in Orlando, Florida, Samantha Gillis of Trumbull won the recent United States ballroom championship competing with her professional partner, Marko Urosevic in the pro-am category.

The pro-am category for dancers age 18 to 35 is the most competition division in ballroom.

The 20-year old Gillis won all four dances against 14 challengers from the United States. Her partner is the owner of the Fred Astaire studio in Trumbull,

Samantha, known to her friends as “Sam”, was the unanimous winner starting with the Waltz. She then captured in succession the Tango, Viennese Waltz and Foxtrot. She and Marko

have been invited to dance their tango routine at the coveted Ohio Star Ball next month that will be seen on a PBS television special in 2016.

Gillis, a lifelong resident of Trumbull graduated Trumbull High School in 2013. She eventually intends to be a ballroom teacher. She is the daughter of John and Jennifer Gillis.

Both an American rhythm and smooth show, hosted by the Premier Ballroom Dance Co. of Connecticut, Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Holy Trinity Greek Church Community Center in Bridgeport features Matthias Kruschel and Christina Schlegel from Germany.
