Ben Lambert / Hearst ConnecticutHAMDEN — Local police say 34 cars were reported stolen in December.
Sgt. Angela Vey, public information officer for the Hamden Police Department, said of the 34 vehicles stolen last month, 14 were either left running or the keys were left inside, Vey said.
Based on the statistics, certain car brands seemed more vulnerable to theft than others. Of the 34 vehicles stolen, 13 were Hyundais and wo were Kias, according to Vey.
“Many of these type(s of) vehicles do not have an immobilizer system, which is a useful piece of electronic security technology that acts as a deterrent to vehicle theft,” Vey said. “Owners of vehicles without an immobilizer system are recommended and encouraged to obtain and use a steering wheel lock.”
Vey said drivers should also take basic measures to deter theft, including rolling up the windows of cars, removing valuables, locking the doors, keeping car keys or fobs on hand and parking in garages or well-lit areas.
“In the event outdoor parking is the only option, owners should consider installing motion-sensor lights,” Vey said.
She advised Kia or Hyundai owners to consider reaching out to their local dealership for additional security tips.
