WEDNESDAY 2:30: A few hundred Trumbull customers have gotten power back, according to United Illuminating Co. Right now the company reports 12,413 customers without power, about 89.68% of Trumbull. That's down from a high of 91% earlier today, but still higher than the total outages reported last night. There are currently 446 reports of wires down or tangled in trees. The town is allowing residents to charge phones and laptops at the Center at Priscilla Place.

WEDNESDAY MORNING UPDATE: United Illuminating reports that 11,709 customers remain without power in Trumbull. There are 418 separate incidents of wires down. Overnight, power was restored to 27 Trumbull customers, but there were also an additional 19 reports of wires down.

The company has not released a timetable for restoration, stating only that "make-safe" operations would take priority over restorations. Of the 23 towns in UI's service area, Trumbull's 84.6% outage rate is the highest among towns that have UI as its primary service provider. Branford, Redding and Weston have higher outage rates, but only a few dozen customers.

UI officials say the company expects to have an estimated restoration timetable in about 24 hours. Earlier updates pasted below

TUESDAY EVENING UPDATE: After briefly dipping below 80%, Trumbull's power outages are currently about 84% of town. Out of 13,841 UI customers, 11,746 are currently dark. The company is reporting 399 separate incidents causing power outages in town.

Three large trees down across Main Street has blocked traffic in both directions for the past 24 hours. A National Guard "supercrew" is working and expects to be able to reopen Main Street.

UI has no estimate for restoration of power, but said the priorities were "make-safe" efforts, followed by restoration. First Selectman Timothy Herbst said this morning that UI's response has been much better than for Tropical Storm Irene and that the efforts should pay off in a quicker overall restoration than after Irene.

MORNING UPDATE: 11,500 Trumbull homes and businesses are without power. UI reports the company is aware of the magnitude of the situation and is compiling a priority restoration list. First Selectman Timothy Herbst will update the town's status at a 10:45 press conference. Follow live tweets of the event here.

7:23 p.m. The number of Trumbull homes without power has doubled in the last few minutes. UI now reporting 4,356 without power in town from 115 separate incidents.

7:15 P.M. UI is reporting 2,139 Trumbull customers without power from 107 separate incidents. First Selectman Timothy Herbst has issued an emergency alert urging residents to stay indoors. Numerous reports of people walking outside. There are limbs down and live power lines may be on the ground, making walking outside extremely dangerous. The situation is expected to get worse over the next several hours.

6:20 p.m. UI is reporting 1,811 Trumbull residents without power from 93 separate incidents. First Selectman Timothy Herbst is telling residents to expect widespread outages in the next few hours. The power may be out for a prolonged period.

Gov. Dannel Malloy has announced the shutdown of two Bridgeport substations to prevent catastrophic failure from flooding. The stations may power back up in the morning. When the stations shut down 52,000 customers will be without power. About 35,000 of those will be Bridgeport customers, the rest in Stratford, Shelton, Fairfield and Trumbull.

3:34 p.m. Looks like almost all of town is back up. UI now reporting only 19 customers without power in town. Total of 152 outages affecting 6,600 UI customers.

2:50 p.m. 91 outages affecting 7,600 customers. UI reports. Trumbull outages down to 856 out of 13,841 customers. Virtually all Trumbull outages are the result of one problem. UI crew on site, estimated 4:52 p.m. restoration.

2:39 p.m. 92 outages currently affecting 17.400 UI customers.

1686 Trumbull customers without power from 15 separate incidents. Work crew on site of a large outage on Easton border affecting 1,000 in Trumbull and surrounding area. Estimate restoration by 5 p.m. New outage in Tashua affecting 743. UI reports that outage is awaiting a crew assignment. No estimate of restoration.

2:27 - A UI work crew is currently on the site of a power outage on the Easton/Trumbull border. The outage is affecting more than 1,000 UI customers. Officials estimate a 4 pm restoration.
