Trumbull defeats Shelton, 3-2, in state tourney

The Trumbull High girls volleyball team went on the road to defeat 14th-seeded Shelton High, 3-2, in a first-round Class LL state tournament match on Monday.

Coach Tamara DeBerry’s 19th-seeded Eagles (11-8) will play at third-seeded Greenwich High (17-2) in the second round on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Trumbull alternated wins with Shelton (13-7), before advancing with a 15-10 victory in game five.

Stephane Targonski had 16 kills, 10 service points, four digs, three aces and a block for the Eagles, who won game one 25-20 and game three 25-18.

Laura Mateusiak had 12 kills, Anna Bivona 47 assists and Jeanette Marini 37 digs against the Gaelettes, who took game two 25-16 and game four 25-20.
