Trumbull, St. Joseph keep on winning
Nick Roberts threw for 501 yards and four touchdowns and coach Bob Maffei’s Trumbull High football team won for the sixth straight week with a 32-28 road victory over Wilton High on Oct. 25.
Thomas Hayduk caught a deflected pass from Roberts in the end zone in the final minute, as the Eagles improved to 6-1.
Wilton (3-4) led 32-15 with 2:31 remaining when Trumbull staged its final comeback.
Marc Cesare scored on a one-yard run, and after the Eagles recovered the onside kick, Roberts, who was 29-of-46 passing, completed his masterful night with his scoring toss to Hayduk.
Wilton took a 7-0 lead into the half, before Hayduk scored on an 18-yard pass to open the third quarter.
It was 14-6 Wilton when Roberts hooked up with Quentin Brunetti for a 27-yard touchdown to close the deficit to 14-12 after three quarters.
Wilton responded to go up 21-12, but Eric Anderson scored on a 31-yard pass and Lance Bragg added the PAT to get Trumbull within 21-19.
St. Joseph football
Coach Joe Della Vecchia’s Cadets posted a 53-7 victory over Trinity Catholic in Stamford on Oct. 26 to set up this week’s showdown at New Canaan.
St. Joseph (7-0) and New Canaan (7-0) will meet at Dunning Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday with state title considerations at stake.
Against Trinity Catholic, the Cadets took leads of 14-0, 33-0 and 46-0 at the breaks.
Mufasa Abdul-Basir ran for 149 yards and four touchdowns.
Jordan Vazzano ran for one score and passed to Lars Pedersen for another.
K’Tory Cobb returned an interception to the end zone, and Kevin Tresz also found paydirt.
Kevin Bortnick had three PATS and Mike Freeman two.
