TRUMBULL - Local Republicans have endorsed 31 candidates to run for Trumbull offices this November as the party seeks to wrest control of town government for the first time since 2017.

In a release issued July 26, a day after their convention, the Trumbull Republican Town Committee listed the candidates who would be running for first selectman, town treasurer, town clerk and seats on town boards.

Headlining the ticket is Mark Block, a former town council member running for first selectman. Lori Rosasco-Schwartz, the council deputy minority leader, said he is a worthy challenger.

“Mark is a true leader with a vision of the future of Trumbull. He can think out of the box yet is willing to listen to all sides,” Rosasco-Schwartz said.

Block said he was inspired to run after the fallout from the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force earlier this year. Social media backlash against the task force’s chairman resulted in half the group resigning.

As a party, the RTC said Republicans are running on a platform of lower taxes, increased attention to infrastructure and what party leaders say is the “politicization” of the school system.

Chris Bandecchi, the Trumbull Republican Town Committee chairman, said that the GOP roster for November reflects the everyday concerns of citizens in the release. But the same release did not make a direct mention of any perceived missteps by two-term incumbent First Selectman Vicki Tesoro, a Democrat who is seeking re-election.

Tesoro said her record speaks for itself.

“I look forward to bringing our strong record of accomplishments and clear vision of the future to our community,” Tesoro said.

Block said the Republican roster reflected ideological and racial diversity, with two Libertarian and one unaffiliated candidate on the ticket.

“Ours is an exceptionally qualified group, and one of the most diverse slates ever offered to our residents by either party,” Block said.
