Thursday power update: 70% of town still without power

UPDATE: Another 700 customers have lost power in the last hour as UI crews de-energize lines that workers are repairing. Currently, 10,417 Trumbull homes and businesses are without power, an increase of 638 since earlier this morning. That number represents 75.26% of UI customers in town.

ORIGINAL STORY: As of Thursday morning more than 70% of United Illuminating customers in Trumbull remain without power, according to the company. That is down from a high of more than 90% yesterday, but actually a slight increase from last night, as work crews must sometimes cut power to a section of town to work on downed lines somewhere else.

Currently, 9,779 Trumbull customers are in the dark, an increase of nearly 1,000 from late last night when the number was about 8,800.

UI officials have now said 95% of its customers would have power back by Monday. Town-by-town projections are not available yet, but First Selectman Timothy Herbst said yesterday that he had been promised at least one additional restoration crew and possibly more National Guard units to assist with clearing heavy debris.
