Suspect arrested in November armed robbery at Gene's, second arrest imminent
Police have arrested one suspect and expect to get another tomorrow in the Nov. 14 armed robbery at Gene's Automotive, 6567 Main Street.
According to Deputy Chief Michael Harry officers served an arrest warrant on Kashawn Brown, 23, of Bridgeport. He is currently in custody with bond set at $100,000.
Police also have a warrant for Patricia Mercaldi, 29, of Bridgeport for the same incident. The warrant charges Mercaldi with conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny. Harry said Trumbull police expect to serve the warrant on Mercaldi tomorrow.
Harry credited an alert customer with providing the crucial information to close the case, which included more than a dozen robberies in multiple towns.
Police said Mercaldi drove to Gene's and waited in the car while Brown entered the station's retail store about 4:20 p.m. Nov. 14. The suspect displayed a handgun and told the attendant to empty the cash registers.
Meanwhile a customer saw the robbery taking place and exited the store, telling other customers to leave as quickly as possible. When Brown exited the store and got into the car, the witness followed at a safe distance, taking down the license plate and a description of the vehicle. The information led directly to Mercaldi, who was also wanted in connection with the theft of some jewelry from a Trumbull home. There were no injuries reported in the incident and none of the customers was directly threatened.
