The United Illuminating Company reports about 93% of its customers now have electric service.  The company's goal was to restore 95% of customers by Monday night.

The company has restored more than 227,000 customers since Hurricane Sandy first struck the service territory. In Trumbull, 13.93% of the town does not have power. Of 13,841 UI customers, 1,928 have not had their electricity restored yet.

“The dedication of our employees is something that I am very proud of,” said James P. Torgerson, UIL’s chief executive officer. “But we still have customers out, so our determination will continue until we have restored all customers’ electric service.”


 The outages that remain will require more time and resources, yet restore fewer customers per event. As of this morning there are approximately 3,000 outage events impacting a single customer, and over 300 outage events impacting two to nine customers.
 
The cities and towns that are currently most impacted include Trumbull, Fairfield, Milford and Easton. The Company expects to continue to make more progress today in those areas and others that still have customers without power.

UI reminds customers to visually check the electrical connection to their home. Damage often occurs to the home that may prevent the customer from receiving service. Any such damage to the property owner’s side must be repaired by a licensed electrician.
 
“We know the weather is getting colder and the public should know that we continue to work around the clock to restore those remaining customers,” said Anthony J. Vallillo, UI’s president and chief operating officer. “We will not rest until the devastation Hurricane Sandy left is completely behind us."

As always, UI also reminds its customers to stay safe and follow these safety practices:
Assume downed, damaged or dangling power lines are live and dangerous.
Avoid anything in which these power lines might be in contact, such as trees or fences.
Keep children and pets indoors and away from danger.
Be mindful of the smell of natural gas.
