The Trumbull High boys hockey received a pair of first-period goals from senior forward Alex Pierne and second-period scores from Reece Sowka and Matt Sarosky for a 4-0 win over Watertown/Pomperaug on Saturday night at The Rinks in Shelton.
The victory evened the Eagles’ record at 1-1. Trumbull opened its season on Wednesday night, also at The Rinks, suffering a 5-4 defeat to East Haven.
Pierne scored his first goal at 5:41, when his high-rising shot went over the shoulder of Panthers’ goalie Carl LaRosa.
After WP’s Jon Manzer took a tripping penalty at 10:28, Pierne netted his second goal of the game and third of the season, at 11:22.
Sowka, a freshmen, scored at 7:33 while his team was short-handed and Sarosky’s score at 9:36 came while the Eagles were on a power play.
“I liked our distribution tonight (seven players earned points),” said Trumbull coach Greg Maxie.
“We got the good start again (the Eagles were up 3-0, against the Easties before losing). Tonight, we managed to hold on to it. We had good energy and our defensive play was solid as well.”
Trumbull held a 28-18 margin in shots while converting on 2-of-3 power-play opportunities. The Eagles also killed off six penalties.
Junior goalie Francis Fromageot made 18 saves in earning the shut-out.
LaRosa turned aside 24 shots for the Panthers (0-2). WP dropped its opener to Stamford, 3-2, last Wednesday night.
