Northwest Catholic upends St. Joseph in Class M final

The St. Joseph High girls soccer team’s quest for a Class M title came to an end in the final on Friday night, as Northwest Catholic pinned a 4-1 defeat on the Cadets at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury.

The top-seeded Indians (19-0-1) got a goal from Anne Higgins 3:11 into the game, then doubled their lead minutes later on a strike from senior All-American Jess Fontaine.

Trailing by two goals in the second half, St. Joseph got on the scoreboard when freshman Marissa Grasso knocked in a cross from classmate Jenna Bike with just under 29 minutes left to play.

But, the Indians responded with goals from Michelle Medina and Bailey Julian to secure their second straight Class M state title.

Fontaine, a senior center forward headed to Quinnipiac University in the fall, won tournament MVP honors.

The Cadets finished their season at 18-3-2 overall.
