New Haven police: 17-month-old dies after overdose
NEW HAVEN — The 17-month-old child who was in critical condition after an apparent overdose over the weekend has died, police said Tuesday.
Her death remains under investigation by the Special Victims Unit, according to police Capt. Anthony Duff.
City police and firefighters around 12:40 p.m. Aug. 8 responded to a 911 call about an unresponsive child at a Norton Street home.
Arriving officers found the young girl had “likely ingested adult medication,” Duff said.
An ambulance took the girl to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, where she remained in “extremely critical condition” in the pediatric intensive care unit Monday. Police described the incident as a “drug overdose.”
SVU detectives responded to the hospital and Norton Street to investigate. An investigatior with the Department of Children and Families was notified and responded, along with some of the city’s forensic detectives, to the Norton Street home.
Duff announced the girl’s death in a news release Tuesday afternoon.
Anyone with information is asked to call detectives in the Special Victims Unit at 203-946-6304.
