Joseph Edward Wiencek
Joseph Edward Wiencek, age 101, of Trumbull, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 21, 2012.
Born on April 12, 1911 in Clinton Massachusetts, Joe spent his childhood days fishing and playing baseball.
After working for four years to support his family, Joe and his family moved to Bridgeport when he was 16 years old to take advantage of better employment opportunities. He would go on to become a 30-year employee of Singer Sewing Machine Company, working there until the company moved overseas. He was then employed by Remington Arms Co. Inc. and Sturm-Ruger & Co. Inc., where his passion for firearms and hunting became apparent, retiring at age 74.
At age 33, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. He saw action at Omaha Beach, Normandy and was wounded at the Moselle River for which he received The Purple Heart. After recuperating for six months in the hospital, Joe returned to duty at the Battle of the Bulge and served in Germany for nine additional months after the end of the war.
Upon his return home, he married Pauline Nemetts and they spent 54 years together until her death in July 2002. Joe was devoted to Pauline, even after she suffered a stroke and he became her dedicated caregiver at home for ten years. Their early years were spent in Stratford, but Trumbull became their home in 1958.
Joe was an avid sportsman and spent many years fresh water fishing, hunting, skiing, and golfing. He also cherished trips to the casinos.
Many weekends were spent with the family at Dutch Hill Ski Area in Heartwellville, VT and his freezer was always filled with trout.
Joe and Polly enjoyed traveling together and playing pinochle and bridge with friends in their later years. He loved to ski with his children and grandchildren. Some of their fondest memories of him were from the ski slopes.
Other activities included the Eighty Plus Ski Club (he retired his skis at age 90), The Stratford Old Timers, and American Legion Post 141 of Trumbull. Joe was an active member of Saint Catherine of Siena Church, in Nichols. Joe was admired by many who hope they too will live as full of a life as he did to the age of 101.
Joe was predeceased by wife, Pauline; his parents, Joseph and Eleanor Wiencek; his sisters, Viola Wiencek and Helen Janowski; and his brother, Stanley Wiencek.
He will be sadly missed by his children, Jeffrey Wiencek, Paula Davidson, Perri Mucci and her husband Dennis, all of Trumbull; as well as his granddaughters and great grandson, Tara Davidson of Huntington, NY, Kyle Davidson of Trumbull, Erin Davidson and her husband, Daniel Kellogg of Pennsburg, PA and their son, Trent Joseph, Alyssa Mucci of New York, NY, Mackenzie Mucci of Stamford and Caleigh Mucci of Trumbull; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 9 a.m. DIRECTLY at St. Catherine of Siena Church, 220 Shelton Road, Trumbull. Interment with military honors will follow in Nichols Farms Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 5-8 pm. in the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford, CT 06615.
