Elliott O. Knecht

Elliott O. Knecht, age 88, of Trumbull, past chief of the Trumbull Center Volunteer Fire Department Co # 1, passed away December 3, 2012 at Bridgeport Hospital.

Mr. Knecht was born in Astoria, Long Island, New York, son of the late Walter and Helen (Osterberg) Knecht.

He was a Trumbull resident for 84 years.

He graduated from Butler Business School and Banking School in Williamstown, MA. He was employed with City Trust bank for 42 years, retiring as assistant treasurer and head of the securities operations for the bank and all of its branches.

A past Chief of the Trumbull Center Volunteer Fire Department Co # 1, he proudly served the town for over 64 years. He was a devoted volunteer who set his standards high and by doing so he developed the respect and admiration from several generations of upcoming firefighters whom to this day still call him "Chief".

He served as Fire Tax Collector for over 20 years. He was a past treasurer of the Washington Masonic Lodge # 19 in Monroe where he has been a member for over 40 years. He was an active parishioner of the Trumbull Congregational Church for 84 years. He served in many capacities throughout the years being involved on many boards, committees and served as Deacon, Trustee and offering steward for over 20 years.

He put in as much time with physical labor to help build and create the church and buildings, including to help hand dig out much of the basement of the main church creating the nursery room and kitchen area. He helped with the bell tower and reinstituted the ringing of the bells on Sunday mornings.

A veteran of WWII he served with the Flying Tigers in the Army Air Corp of which he was very proud. He served under General Chenault in the China- Burma, and India Theatre.

He met his beloved wife of 63 years, MaryJane (Raymond) Knecht at the bank in 1947 and they were married in 1949.

Elliott took great pride that he built his own home with the help of his brothers and father.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his devoted daughter Gail and her husband Bill Messina of New Milford; two brothers Ernest and his wife Jeanne Knecht of Trumbull and David and his wife Ethel Knecht of Monroe, sisters-in-law Shirley Knecht and Jessie Knecht both of Trumbull; Daughter-in-law Tammy Knecht of Stratford and her daughter Wendi McManus; seven cherished grandchildren, Heather Keeler, Erica Messina, Jarrett Messina, Joel Knecht, Keith Knecht and Trevor Knecht; and 10 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Raymond E. Knecht, his granddaughter Jodi Messina Mylie, two brothers George and Lester Knecht and his sister Edythe Vitale.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial service on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Trumbull Congregational Church 3115 Reservoir Ave. Trumbull with the Reverend Paul Goodman officiating. Interment will be private. Arrangements in care of the Cyril F. Mullins Funeral Home 399 White Plains Rd. Trumbull.
