Cadets lose to Academics

The St. Joseph High football team lost to Hillhouse High by a score of 34-14 in a Class M state quarterfinal game played in a snowstorm at Frank Crisafi Field in East Haven on Wednesday.

Coach Joe Della Vecchia's fifth-seeded Cadets finish the season at 8-3, while coach Tom Dyer's fourth-seeded Academics advance with a 9-2 mark.

Hillhouse recovered a St. Joseph fumble on its first play from scrimmage and scored to take a 7-0 lead with only 30 seconds gone off the game clock.

The Cadets' Jake Pelletier returned the kickoff 92 yards for an answering score, but the PAT missed.

St. Joseph had two opportunities in the red zone on their next two series, only to come up empty.

It was 21-7 Hillhouse when St. Joseph drove to the Acs' 17 only to have Darryn Horner return an interception 98 yards for a score in the waning seconds of the first half.

The Cadets made it 28-14 on Jordan Vazzano's 15-yard quarterback scramble and Shane Miller's conversion catch with 11:42 remaining.

Hillhouse completed the scoring on Je'Vaughn Moore's touchdown run with 4:35 remaining.
