Quincy McKnight scored nine of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter when coach Chris Watts’ St. Joseph High boys basketball team turned back Fairfield Ludlowe, 59-51, at Vito Montelli Court on Monday night.

“The kids are shooting well from the free throw line,” said Watts, whose team converted six late in its season-opening win over Ridgefield. “As a coach you like to see the kids finish.”

McKnight made six straight shots from the line in the final two minutes to offset a strong come back attempt by Ludlowe (1-1).

“It’s tough chasing them [from behind] because you know they’ll make their free throws,” Falcon coach Brian Slvestro said. “We prepared pretty well, but you have to give St. Joes credit. You can prepare for the press, but they still make you pay.”

The Cadets used its pressure to turn a 13-11 lead after one period into a 28-16 game at the half.

Jonny Dzurenda scored 17 points for St. Joseph.
