Twins Judy & Joy: Use your grill for a Brie surprise

Where did July go? It went by way too fast but it was one fabulous month! The weather is still beautiful and warm and we plan to spend every minute we can out on the patio. From pancakes for breakfast with the kids, to entertaining friends on Saturday nights, we will be outside for sure.

When entertaining outdoors, it is easier to prepare the entire meal on the grill and serve right from there. This way you won’t miss too much of the juicy gossip!!

You can cook just about anything on a grill these days and trying new things is fun and intriguing to your guests. We like to do something unexpected … our kids are becoming really creative when hosting their own parties now too!

Did you know you can grill a wheel of Brie? It is amazing and one of our favorite easy appetizers to serve. Warm, luscious and slightly smoky this hors d'oeuvre is sheer perfection. It is a simple way to begin a meal and is ready very quickly. Paired with a chilled pinot grigio, or a fruity chilled sangria and few of your favorite fruits or roasted vegetables … need we say more?

Grilled Brie with Figs and Local Honey

A simple starter with fresh ingredients makes this a stunner for your friends and family!

Camembert cheese or triple cream Brie, any size wheel

2 tablespoons olive oil (infused oils work fabulously)

figs, preferably fresh

honey, good quality

pastry brush

crusty bread slices, crackers

any of your fresh herbs, garnish, optional


Brush cheese wheel with olive oil on both sides using your pastry brush. Place cheese on the center of the grill, on indirect heat, until the rind is soft, about 2-3 minutes per side. Don't can burn easily. Using a metal spatula, place cheese wheel onto a serving plate. Place fresh figs right onto the top, drizzle honey and perfume the dish with a fresh herb. Break right through the top of the cheese into the soft center. Yum!!


If grilling scares you (or if you just don’t have a grill), you can bake this brie at 350 for about 15 minutes or until hot and gooey. A stovetop grill pan works nicely also.
