A treats store and an expressive arts expert have teamed to offer unique summer programs for kids that will highlight spiders and super heroes, jewelry making and public speaking \u2014 among a host of other options with such titles as \u201cWhite Gloves & Silver Spoons\u201d and \u201cChill-axin\u201d for Tweens.\u201d Allison B. Spitzer, MA, of Trumbull-based Periwinkle Health, will lead the July programs in conjunction with Grandma Josie\u2019s candy store at 477 Main St, Monroe. Each day a theme will combine crafts, games and often performing arts, as well as candy, cookie or treat making. The first session, running July 6-10, will have options for children in kindergarten through Grade 3 that will include fairytales, super heroes, \u201ccozy creators,\u201d masks and \u201crobots and princesses.\u201d For Grades 4 through 8, that week will feature sessions on \u201cbling,\u201d creative drama, \u201cscrappy kids,\u201d and \u201cflower power.\u201d The sessions for Grades 6 through 9 will begin with \u201cbling\u201d and then move on to public speaking, \u201cHopes and Dreams,\u201d Image Work and \u201cStress Less.\u201d Other sessions in July will include \u201cMessy Crafts,\u201d Improvisation, and \u201cA Girl\u2019s Guide to Being a Lady.\u201d The campers will make treats with Grandma Josie\u2019s owner, former teacher, Donnelle Toner. \u201cChildren and adolescents gain much more than \u2018playtime\u2019 or relaxation through creative self-expression opportunities like this,\u201d Spitzer said. \u201cSelf-esteem, communication skills, social skills and independence are fostered in the midst of so much fun.\u201cIt\u2019s rare today that there is a chance for kids to simply enjoy the process of making, creating and doing, rather than working towards a final product to be view and judged,\u201d Spitzer said.
