For the past several years, Notre Dame has had its presence on the Connecticut high school wrestling scene via individual team status. That will change this school year as the sport of wrestling will be added as a full-fledged varsity sport starting in the winter of 2016-17. It will be the school’s 13th varsity sport and will compete along with basketball, ice hockey, swimming, and indoor track in the winter sports season.
“We did a survey among our student body and found that there was enough interest to warrant a full varsity team,” said President Robert F. Curis. “We are excited about the opportunity it will offer our student-athletes in the winter months. Wrestling helps young people develop important qualities such as self esteem, sportsmanship, and work ethic and can dramatically improve one’s ability to perform in other sports.”
“Our first-year plan is to compete in invitationals and some dual meets with teams of our caliber before jumping into the deep end of the pool with a full SCC schedule,” said Athletic Director Tom Marcucci ‘66. “This will be a great addition to our overall athletics program. We have had past success with our individual wrestlers and hope this will continue as we move forward with a full program.”
With the announcement of the starting of a wrestling program, that creates a head coaching vacancy. The head coach will be responsible for starting and developing the program from scratch. Previous coaching experience is essential.
Qualifications include the following: Bachelor’s Degree, from an accredited college or university; successful wrestling coaching experience head coaching experience preferred; ability to supervise personnel through previous leadership experience.
