The Trumbull Post 141 baseball team split an American Legion Zone IV doubleheader with host Stamford Post 3 on Saturday, losing the first game 4-2 and winning the second 2-1.
Trumbull (15-3) will host Stamford (14-2) in the rubber game on Sunday at Trumbull High at 10 a.m.
Brian Hnatuk (3-1) pitched six innings for Trumbull in the opener, giving up four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Stamford’s Peter Horn also went the distance, allowing two runs in seven hits.
Trumbull took a 1-0 lead in the second.
Alex Rauso led off with a single to right field. Jack Lynch followed with a single over third base. After Vin DeRubeis hit into a 6-6-3 double play, Andrew Lojko’s single drove in Rauso.
With one out in the Stamford second, Christopher Clemmenson and Nico Kydes drew back to back walks. After a flyout to right field, Tyler Serricchio singled to left to load the bases. Leadoff hitter Telly Colarossi hit a two-run single to center plating Clemmenson and Kydes for a 2-1 lead,
Stamford tacked on a run in the fourth. With two outs, Dean DePreta legged out an infield single to short and stole second. Serricchio was with a pitch, before Colarossi drove in DePreta with a single to center.
Trumbull trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth.
Tyler Zikias singled to center to start inning before being forced out by Simon Whiteman, who stole second. Dustin Sequeira bunted Whiteman to third on a pitcher to first sacrifice. With Matt Fasoli up, Whiteman scored on a wild pitch. Fasoli walked and Chris O’Brien had a broken bat single before a groundout to third ended the inning.
Stratford added a run in the bottom of the sixth. Kydes led off with single to center. Stefan Uka ran for Kydes and DePreta sacrificed him to second. Serricchio doubled to left to drive in Uka.
O’Brien (3-0) pitched a five-hit complete game win in the second game. He struck out four.
Mike White took the loss despite allowing only one earned run, four hits and striking out five.
Trumbull had solid pitching, key hits, took advantage of one big error and had two great defensive plays in bottom of the seventh to seal the win.
Stamford took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Serricchio doubled to start the inning advanced to third on a wild pitch. Horn drove him in with a groundout short to first.
With two outs in the Trumbull sixth, Fasoli worked a walk and Lynch singled to center.
Justin Waldek’s bloop hit to left center scored Fasoli with the tying run. DeRubeis hits a ball down the third base line that Horn speared crossing into foul territory. He doesn’t have a play at third and threw late trying to get DeRubeis. The throw is low and got past first base, scoring Waldek for a 2-1 lead.
In the Stamford seventh, Shawn Urbano pinch hit for Michael Tufano and drew a seven-pitch walk. Kydes hit a line drive to right that Waldek caught on a bounce before firing to DeRubeis at first base to get Kydes on a 9-3 putout. Urbano went to second on the play.
DePreta then singled to center. Whiteman came up throwing and Urbano was out at the plate with Rauso making the tag.
A lineout to Lojko at third ended the game.
