The Trumbull Post 141 baseball team defeated Westport Legion, 15-2 (5 inning mercy rule) at Staples High on Wednesday when manager Brett Conners’ squad improved to 12-2 on the Zone IV season.
Jared Rosen went the distance, allowing three hits, walking none, and striking out five.
Trumbull had 13 hits and scored six runs in second inning, five runs in fourth and four runs in fifth.
The six-run second-inning rally came with two out.
Brian Hnatuk tripled to right center before Justin Waldek and Andrew Lojko were hit by pitches to load the bases for Tyler Zikias, who singled home two runs. A third run scored on an error on the play.
Zikias went to third on wild pitch. Simon Whiteman walked. Whiteman and Zikias executed a double steal and Zikias scored. Dustin Sequeira reached on an infield hit and Whiteman scored on the play. Matt Fasoli’s RBI double plated Sequeira.
In the fourth, Lojko singled on a high hopper over second to start the inning. Zikias followed with his second hit, putting runners on first and second. Whiteman bunted towards the pitcher for a hit The late throw went past first base and Lojko scored.
Sequeira was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Zikias scored on fielder’s choice to short by Fasoli, putting Whiteman at third and Fasoli at first.
Chris O’Brien singled home Whiteman and Alex Rauso plated Fasoli with a hit. O’Brien scored on a wild pitch for an 11-0 lead.
Westport’s two tallies came on back-to-back-to-back doubles from their first three hitters (Kevin Rabacs, Luke Yokoi and Noah Yokoi) in the fourth inning (those were only three hits Rosen surrendered).
Tyler Zikias drew a leadoff walk and stole second base in the fifth. Whiteman tripled to right, scoring Zikias. After a popup to second, Whiteman scored on a wild pitch. Fasoli singled and Rauso walked.
Hnatuk then hit a two-run double plating Vin DeRubeis, who was pinch running for Fasoli, and Rauso.
Trumbull looks for three-game sweep today at 5:30 p.m. at Trumbull High.
