The Trumbull-based South Side Wrestling club took its talent to Lake Placid (N.Y.) the weekend of May 20, to wrestle with some of the best club teams in the country.
South Side started its weekend with a tough match-up against Iowa Style from Brewster (N.Y.), which is is known to attract some of the best talent in its home state and Connecticut.
Highlights of the match included Ryan Luth of South Side with a major decision over his Iowa Style opponent and Hakim Fleming (two-time CT. state champion, 2016 New England champion) defeating Johnson & Wales-bound Mike Larm with a very exciting and athletic performance to win 3-1 in sudden victory.
South Side moved into the very competitive B bracket to take on Tin Man Wrestling Club (Pa.) and John Clark Wrestling of Rhode Island.
With both matches starting 12-0 in favor of Tin Man and Clark due to forfeits at 170 and 225, South Side rebounded well before losing 38-33 and 36-30, respectively.
Posting the wins for the locals were Jack Ryan, Matt Ryan, Nate Reyes, Brian Wallace, Mike Mirmina and Joey Ryan.
South Side then won its next match to advance to the bracket finals.
Fleming and Luth finished the tournament undefeated, going 6-0 over the weekend.
South Side Wrestling Club practices Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Trumbull High School Auxiliary gym.
First through 12th graders, and beginners to advanced wrestlers are welcome.
