Trumbull High scored runs in every inning when the Eagles defeated visiting Greenwich High, 13-0, in an efficient five innings of FCIAC softball on Monday.

Coach Jacqui Sheftz’s Trumbull team put three runs on the board in the first inning, and Lea Thompson capped the contest with a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

“We’re always stressing getting out of the top of the first inning and getting the bats in our hands and putting runs on the board early,” Sheftz said. “That settles down your pitcher and your defense.”

Ally Szabo threw no-hit ball, with the Cardinals lone base runner coming in the top of the fifth when Julie Gambino reached on an infield error. Szabo struck out two of the next three batters to leave her on first.

“I thought Ally threw the ball very well today,” Sheftz said. “Kudos to Jill (O’Connell) who catches her. She does a really great job framing Ally’s pitching and they have great chemistry.”

Lauren Zielinski reached on a bad-hop single in the home first inning and went to third on a pair of wild pitches. Marisa Valenti walked and never stopped running to reach second safely.

That brought Taylor Brown to the plate, and the lefty-swinger went the other way and drove a two-run single into left field.

Erica Fluskey drew the Eagles’ fourth walk in the second inning to force home a run.

In the third, Thompson and Delilha Distefano had singles and later scored on RBI grounders by O’Connell and Sarah Angelo.

DeStefano doubled home two runs in the fourth to stake Trumbull to an 8-0 lead.

Valenti doubled with one out in the fifth and Brown walked. Fluskey plated one run with a single and Stephanie Liptack drilled a double to plate another.

Thompson then sent a three-run home run over the fence in left field.
