Legion baseball wins opener

Three pitchers combined on the shutout when the Trumbull Post 141 American Legion baseball team opened its season with a 1-0 victory over Bridgeport on Monday.

Trumbull will host Bridgeport today at Trumbull High and will visit Bridgeport on Wednesday at Seaside Park to complete the three-game series.

Zach Sagar plated Simon Whiteman with the game’s only run with an RBI groundout to shortstop in the first inning.

Whiteman had led off the frame with a single to right. He stole second and went to third on Justin Waldek’s infield groundout.

Sagar threw out runners attempting to steal bases in each of the first three innings.

Starter Nikko Arganese went three innings, allowed three hits, walked one and struck out a batter.

Frank Puglia came on in relief in the fourth and struck out five in his three innings of work to garner the win. He gave up one hit and walked two.

Chris O’Brien got the save after he struck out the side in the seventh.
