Cross Cannone from Trumbull High placed second in the 132-pound weight class at the New England wrestling tournament in North Andover (Mass.) on Saturday. Tristan Haviland was fifth in the 106-pound class.
Trumbull (40) placed 10th in the team competition, won by Mt. Anthony, Vt. (122.5). Newtown High (84) was second, Fairfield Warde (69) third and Danbury (51.5) sixth.
Cannone, the top seed from Connecticut, lost to Dylan Lafountain, the top seed from Vermont, by a score of 4-2 in the title bout.
Cannone had advanced with a 6-3 decision over Bradley Lipiani, the fourth seed from Massachusetts, and then the senior pinned Maine runner-up Peyton Cole in 36 seconds to get to the semifinals.
There, Cannone topped Jon Ryan, the top seed from Masachusetts, by a score of 6-1. Ryan wrestled back to take third.
Haviland was the third seed at 106 pounds from Connecticut.
A sophomore, Haviland advanced to the first round with an 11-0 major decision over Leo Amabile, the third seed from Maine.
Haviland made it to the quarterfinals after he won a 4-3 decision from Vermont champion Ashdin Schaefer.
Haviland gained the semifinals when he defeated Mitch Raposo, the fourth seed from Massachusetts, 9-3.
Kevin Morris, the Massachusetts champion, defeated Haviland 4-0. Connecticut champ Zach Murillo from Southington pinned Morris in 1:31 to win the title.
After losing 6-3 to Jordan Rowlett, the top seed from Vermont, Haviland pinned Conor Thompson, the Massachusetts runner-up, in 5:26 to earn fifth.
Jakob Camacho from Danbury placed third.
Stephen Briganti, the third seed from Connecticut at 160 pounds, pinned Ryan Haff, the Vermont third seed, in 1:14 in his first match.
Jonathan Viruet, the Massachusetts top seed who went on to win the title, defeated Biganti 15-2.
In wrestlebacks, Briganti lost by first-period fall to Justin Freyermuth, the third seed from Massachusetts.
