September is Hunger Action month – Seeking donations for Spooner House

Spooner House is making a special push during September as part of Hunger Action Month to help the one in five children at risk of facing hunger daily. That is 19.5% of children in our state. 520,000 people in Connecticut are at risk of hunger every day. It is by working together that we can help stamp out hunger in the state. Some suggestions to help this effort are:

Pledge to make your morning coffee at home for one week and donate the savings to Spooner House. Challenge a friend to join.

Organize a food drive at your school, workplace or place of worship to help fill the ‘Giant Pumpkin’ in the Spooner House lobby.

Donate to our “virtual food drive” to help restock our shelves.

Spooner House operates the largest food pantry in the Lower Naugatuck Valley. In 2013, Spooner House served 135,000 meals through the Valley Food Bank and 30,000 meals through their shelter.

Items needed at the Valley Food Bank: Soups, stews, canned chili, tuna, canned fruit, canned chicken/meat/spam, peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, rice, canned/instant potatoes, coffee and tea, corned beef hash, cereal and oatmeal, beans, pastas and sauce.
