Brian Hnatuk from Trumbull helped pitch Eastern Connecticut State University to an 11-4 victory over the University of Scranton at North Charlotte Regional Park in Port Charlotte (Fla.).
Hnatuk, a right-handed senior, allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts and no walks over the first 4 1/3 innings as first-year ECSU coach Brian Hamm won his first game with the Warriors.
Hamm was named at Eastern this year after compiling a 221-113 record in nine seasons at Amherst College, averaging 25 wins per year and leading the Mammoths to 20-win seasons each year.
Hnatuk appeared in three games, one as a starter with a 0-1 record and 2.08 ERA as a junior when he struck out six and walked one in 8.2 innings.
As a sophomore, Hnatuk went 2-2 with a 4.12 ERA. He struck out 10 and walked 26 in 39.1 innings.
Hnatuk appeared in 10 games as a freshman.
An accounting major, Hnatuk pitched and played third base for coach Phil Pacelli’s THS Eagles, helping Trumbull win the FCIAC title as a sophomore.
He was team captain and second-team All-FCIAC as a sophomore.
