Stern Village looking for community partnerships

The Trumbull Housing Authority, Stern Village is interested in developing community partnerships with local businesses, organizations and the residents of Trumbull. The village is looking for donations and support in a number of areas.

Stern Village is a vibrant, low income housing authority for senior citizens, the frail and disabled. The Village has 186 apartments including a two-story congregate residential facility.

The residents have established a Stern Village Neighborhood Watch, to monitor the village. The village is asking for flashlights, walkies-talkies, fluorescent vests and fluorescent belts for the Neighborhood Watch.

Stern Village could also use support with its new emergency preparations. The village has a generator in the community room and have implemented town-approved Emergency Management Plans, enabling our community room to serve as a a shelter and command post in the event of an a emergency, such as experienced with Hurricane Sandy. Donations of large storage container, cots, blankets, and an abundance of supplies in order to keep our residents safe and comfortable are welcome. The generator was installed expeditiously and cost efficiently (close to 40% cheaper than original quotes) due to the corporate partnership with Strathmoor Electric, according to Director Harriet Polansky.

Wireless internet has recently been activated the community room and congregate dining room. However, the village lacks computers for residents’ use. While the community has volunteers to teach computer classes, donations of tablets for the residents would be appreciated. The village is seeking computers that run Microsoft 7 and are Internet ready.

The community room can be a lively place for activities with the right equipment, according to Polansky. Donations of a ping pong table, a pool table, a Foosball table, Wii with controllers and games for Wii, as well as board games would be welcome donations. This will provide physical and cognitive therapeutic value to residents, the director said.

We can use picnic tables and lawn furniture, along with horse shoe sets, Bocce ball sets, and other senior adult outdoor equipment. We would like a putting green and need left and right handed putters and golf balls.

Stern Village has received corporate donations from Strathmoor Electric, John Vazzano, Vazzy’s, Stop & Shop. And CES. It’s easy to become a corporate or residential partner of Stern Village, Polansky said. Please email Harriet Polansky, [email protected] for more information.
