Trumbull probable No. 2 seed on Saturday

The Wilton Warriors began the girls basketball season with plenty of promise, but had a relatively quiet first couple of weeks while splitting their first four games. Now they’re heading into the postseason as the hottest team in the FCIAC.

The Warriors made it 15 straight victories by rolling to a 50-30 victory over defending league champion Danbury in Wilton on Thursday night. The win puts Wilton (15-2 FCIAC) in position to take the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, which begin Saturday. The Warriors have one game remaining — against Bassick on Friday — and can secure that top spot with a win.

The current first-place team, the Trumbull Golden Eagles, are 16-2 in the FCIAC and have completed their regular season schedule. In a tie with Wilton, the Eagles would fall to No. 2 based on their 43-31 loss to the Warriors on Feb. 1.

The FCIAC tournament looks a bit more open than it did a few weeks ago, as defending champion Danbury has stumbled in the last two weeks. The Hatters looked unbeatable while winning their first 16 games, but lost three of their last four games to Westhill, Trumbull and Wilton.

Both Danbury and Westhill suffered losses in their final regular-season games Thursday, as Westhill lost to Trinity Catholic, 49-38.

Westhill and Danbury finished tied at 15-3, with Westhill taking the No. 3 seed based on its 46-35 victory over the Hatters last week. Danbury finished No. 4 and will host a quarterfinal game.

Darien (14-4) finished the season with a 63-59 win at Stamford, jumping ahead of the Knights and into fifth place. Stamford (14-4) is now the No. 6 seed.

The seventh seed goes to Trinity Catholic (13-5), which beat city rival Westhill on Thursday, while Ridgefield (13-5) is the No. 8 seed. Trinity took the higher seed based on its 58-51 win over Ridgefield this season.
